Spring is coming — here's how to properly conduct the first inspection after winter and document everything thoroughly.
The first inspection in spring is one of the most important dates in the beekeeping year. This is where the course is set for how the season begins.
When Is the Right Time?
The spring inspection should take place when:
- Temperatures are consistently above 12 degrees Celsius
- Bees are already actively bringing in pollen
- There is no persistent rain or strong wind
- Ideally between late February and mid-March (depending on region)
What to Check
1. Colony Strength
How many frame spaces are occupied? A strong colony sits on at least 4–6 frame spaces in spring.
2. Is the Queen Present?
You don't necessarily need to see the queen. Fresh eggs are the best proof that she's there and laying.
3. Food Reserves
After winter, reserves can be low. At least 5 kg of food should still be available; otherwise, initiate emergency feeding.
4. Brood Nest
Is the brood pattern closed? Spotty brood can indicate disease and needs further observation.
5. Dead Bees and Debris
A look at the bottom board insert shows whether winter proceeded normally or if there are anomalies.
Documentation with Hivekraft
With the quick check in the inspection feature of Hivekraft, you can document the spring inspection quickly and in a structured way:
- Select colony — directly from the colony list
- Start quick check — colony strength, queen, eggs with one tap
- Add notes — food status, special observations
- Done — everything saved and noted in the colony record book
This gives you a clean documented season start for every colony.
Tip: Plan Tasks
Create tasks in Hivekraft for the next steps: expansion, inserting drone frames, or adding the first honey super. This way you don't forget anything.
